EP 27: Mary Kay Cabot, Browns Beat Writer

Published

on

On this episode of the Moran-Alytics Podcast, Patrick Moran is joined by long-time Cleveland Browns beat reporter Mary Kay Cabot.

They talk about Cabot’s remarkable career covering the Browns for Cleveland.com with stories also appearing in The Plain Dealer.  Unlike many sports journalist who bounce around before finding their mainstay, Cabot’s has been a career spent covering one team for nearly 28 years.

It’s also a career built from timing and loyalty.  Cabot nearly moved to Florida after graduating college from Kent State, In fact she was literally packed to move to Florida before getting the call with a job offer to work at The Plain Dealer.  Along the way she’s had several opportunities to leave for what many perceive as greener pastures, including a job at ESPN but she ultimately decided to stay in Cleveland.

Cabot talks about being a female sports beat writer in a male dominated business, how social media can be an unfair and cruel place, the responsibility she carries being a NFL Hall of Fame voter, and what fans can expect when the Cleveland Browns star on HBO’s Hard Knocks this summer.

(TBP 301) Power Ranking The 2024 Buffalo Bills Road Trips

Published

By

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by frenemy and recurring guest Joe From Queens and each are power ranking the Buffalo Bills 2024 road games in order from the least to the most they’d like to be able to make it a road trip.

The Bills are on the road nine times this year, three of course consisting of trips to Foxboro, Miami and New York/New Jersey like every year. They’re also at (in order of schedule) Baltimore (Sunday night), Houston, Seattle, Indianapolis, Los Angeles and Detroit. Patrick asked Joe to rank all the games in order he’d like take a road trip to watch them in person based on some criteria, including the opponent, desire to see the city/region for either the first time or again, potential weather and time of year with Joe adding in cost as a factor.

There were a few surprises in each person’s countdown, including Miami being surprisingly low among both but a huge difference between the two when it came to going to Foxboro and Baltimore. Each guy has a different game ranked at the top of their list and here’s a spoiler alert—Patrick asks Joe if he’s planning on buying a Stefon Diggs Houston Texans jersey.

EP 91: Mike Rodak (ESPN) Talks Patriots & Bills

Published

on

By

On this episode of the Moran-Alytics Podcast, Patrick Moran chats with ESPN Buffalo Bills beat reporter Mike Rodak about a handful of New  England Patriots and Bills topics.

Rodak was previously a guest on the podcast back last May (Episode No. 25) and then we learned plenty about Mike beyond his ESPN job, including his upbringing, education, career journey and his takes on a ton of sports media, social media and fun human interest topics.

Today’s conversation is more to the point as Rodak weighs in on the Patriots perhaps now the greatest dynasty of all-time, not just in football but all of sports.  He also has insight as to why the Patriots aren’t on the same popularity level as some of other all-time great dynasties in other sports, talks about what makes them nearly unstoppable, warns fans that they’re not going away anytime soon and offers his opinion on why we may not have seen the last of Gronk.

Mike also has takes on a handful of Bills topics, including Lesean McCoy’s future with the team, what incumbent offensive lineman may be back in 2019 and a position the team may spend heavy resources on that most fans probably don’t expect.

You can follow Mike on Twitter at @MikeRodak and check out his work at ESPN.com.

Immediately after Moran is joined by his buddy Tone Pucks (@tonepucks) for another installment of “Pat with Pucks.”  The two are complaining about the Super Bowl, a lackluster 2018 NFL season in general, the NBA owning a lot of Super Bowl week and a discussion about the ongoing Buffalo Sabres struggles.

Also, Patti LaBelle, Human League and Culture Club somehow end up getting worked into the segment.

(TBP 969) Biggest Bills Divisional Round Win Takeaways

Published

on

By

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran goes over some of his biggest takeaways on the heels of the Buffalo Bills holding off the Baltimore Ravens, 27-25 to advance to the AFC championship game next Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs.

As expected but no less annoying, the main national narrative stemming from this game is more about Baltimore finding a way to lose than the Bills earning the victory. It’s something Patrick takes great issue with and points out several key ways in which the Bills are not getting nearly enough credit for, including great individual plays that forced all three Ravens turnovers, game planning and committing to not letting Derrick Henry run wild on them, the Bills rushing for more yards in the first half than the Ravens give up per game, going a perfect three-for-three in the red zone in the first half and being completely clean in the turnover department on their end.

Patrick also spends time highlighting how much better the Bills were in the trenches on both sides of the ball this time around compared to their first meeting in Baltimore back in Week four. In that game the Bills were bullied all over the field along the lines, and that was clearly not the case this past Sunday night.

Patrick also has thoughts on people who are vigorously either defending or lambasting Lamar Jackson’s performance in this game, Baltimore’s suspect game plan and coaching, Joe Brady not being at his best, a few things the Bills need to improve at if they’re going to knock off the Chiefs to get the Super Bowl and plenty more.

Major props to Talking Buffalo sponsor, Sonny Red’s at 1841 Abbott Road in Lackawanna, just minutes from Highmark Stadium. We consider them THE most underrated spot for wings, pizza and other great food in Western New York plus it’s a great place to drink and have a great time.
