TBP 254: Kelsey Anderson, WIVB-TV

On this episode of the future award-winning Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran has a chat with WIVB-TV morning co-anchor Kelsey Anderson about a variety of topics spanning her life and career.
Kelsey was born and raised in Western New York and attended Orchard Park high school. She discusses growing up wanting to be in the TV business but also being introverted and how it took time to begin to find her own voice. She attended Ithaca college in preparation for a career that would ultimately lead her back to Buffalo.
But not before a lengthy stint in Boise, Idaho. Kelsey spent four and a half years working and living in Boise and discusses some of the similarities and differences with Western New York. In the spring of 2018 Kelsey took a job at WIVB and returned home. She talks about that process and how it wasn’t quite the easy decision most imagine it was.
They also spend time talking about her job ritual and sleeping schedule that comes with being a morning anchor, working through challenging times during Covid-19, the significance of good relationships at the TV station, her stance on social media, why she loves Buffalo so much and a few of her favorite wing and pizza joints.
They wrap with the traditional Fun Fact Finale and we learn plenty of fun facts about Kelsey, including her favorite city she’s visited, her worst habit, what game show she could dominate, her signature karaoke song and much more.
You can follow Kelsey on Twitter @4KelseyAnderson and of course check her out in the mornings on WIVB-TV.
After that Patrick does a segment of “Pat’s Picks” where he picks the winners of this week’s upcoming NFL games against the point spread. He went 9-5-1 in Week one and this will be a regular segment on Friday’s for the remainder of the NFL regular season.

(TBP 962) Bills vs Broncos Preview & Bold Predictions (Featuring Ben Allbright)

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran has a full Buffalo Bills vs Denver Broncos wildcard round preview as well as keys to victory and bold predictions, featuring a segment with Broncos reporter and NFL insider Benjamin Allbright.
Many expect the Broncos to be the Bills toughest wildcard round opponent throughout this Josh Allen era. Patrick brings in Allbright, one of the most respected NFL voices in the business who’s based in Denver for his expertise.
Among the topics discussed during Ben’s time is the vibe in Denver following a nine-year playoff drought being broken, the emergence of rookie Bo Nix after witnessing several years of floundering quarterback play, the Denver pass rushers on a Broncos defense that led the entire NFL in sacks this season, what areas of the Broncos should concern their fans the most and a few of the biggest factors in what could be an upset Denver victory on Sunday.
From there Patrick goes over what he considers three of the biggest keys to Buffalo holding serve at home and advancing to next week’s divisional round, including the defense being on point when it comes to tackling, an offensive line that plays up to the standard they have all season, and avoiding the whacky mistakes that led to Denver winning in Buffalo last season.
That plus some fun bold predictions, a final score guess from both Ben and Patrick and much more.

(TBP 876) Buffalo Bills Film & PFF Grade Takeaways – Cam Lewis Shines

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran offers his biggest takeaways after analyzing the Pro Football Focus grades and watching the game film of the Buffalo Bills season opening 34-28 victory over the Arizona Cardinals.
It doesn’t take a film expert or guru on any level to conclude the Bills are 1-0 this week because Josh Allen and Gregory Rousseau respectively both played like superstars. So much in fact that that Patrick barely spends any time during this episode discussing them. They were great—that’s obvious.
Instead Patrick dives into some other takeaways from the game both good and bad for Buffalo, highlighted by an unexpected (very) good game from Bills reserve defensive back Cam Lewis, who was pressed into action early after All-Pro cornerback Taron Johnson was injured just four minutes into the first quarter. Lewis played surprisingly great against then run and was good enough in pass defense as well and his performance went a long way towards keeping the Bills defense from completely falling apart.
Conversely, Ed Oliver didn’t just struggle but was downright invisible Sunday. Patrick talks about him in addition to the borderline shocking usage of the defensive line starters, success James Cook had running the football on first downs, Keon Coleman changing the mind quickly of critics, the safety position continuing to be worrisome and a breakdown of who was responsible on Buffalo’s botched kickoff coverage play that allowed Arizona to stay in the game after the Bills went up two scores.
That plus a big event coming to Imperial Pizza this week, a (very) quick look at Miami and what’s on tap here at Talking Buffalo for the rest of the week plus much more.

TBP 233: Gill Byrd, Former NFL Star

On this episode of the future award-winning Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran has a chat with former San Diego Chargers star and team Hall of Famer, Gill Byrd on a wide variety of topics spanning his life and career.
Gill talks about growing up as a child in the San Francisco area, originally into judo as a kid in lieu of football. In fact, he didn’t even start playing football until at least 12 years and only did so to feel more involved in family conversations about the sport. He became a star running back and defensive back and Lowell High School but didn’t receive any scholarships because of his smallish size. He walked onto to San Jose State and five years later would transform himself into a first-round pick.
In fact, Byrd was selected 22nd overall in the 1983 NFL draft by the Chargers, largely considered the greatest collection of first-round talent in the history of the league. Byrd was on a list of first-rounders that included Hall of Famers John Elway, Eric Dickerson, Jim Kelly, Bruce Matthews, Darrell Green and Dan Marino.
Byrd talks, quite candidly about how he was verging on being a “bust” early on his NFL career, struggling while moving around the defensive backfield and how it took an injury to a teammate to really jumpstart what was becoming a mediocre career. From there he became a multi-time All-Pro and during his 10-year career finished with 42 interceptions, still to this day the most in franchise history. Byrd talks about that, picking Elway off nine times, what it was like to play with Junior Seau, and what it’s meant to him to be inducted into the Chargers Hall of Fame in 1998.
Of course, many Bills fans hear the last name Byrd and immediately think of Jairus. Gill’s son was a second-round pick by the Bills in 2009 and had one of the better rookie campaigns in franchise if not league history, picking off nine passes his first year. Gill recalls his emotion as a dad seeing Jairus follow his dreams to the NFL and the success he had in Buffalo.
Gill would later spend a year in the Bills organization himself as the secondary coach in 2017. He discusses that year, the season the Bills would end their 17-year playoff drought and what it felt like to be fired after one year despite coaching one of the better performing secondaries in the NFL— a unit that included a rookie in Tre White and two safeties new to the organization, Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer. Byrd offers his thoughts on respecting Sean McDermott’s decision and his relationship with Leslie Frazier.
Well beyond football, Byrd spends time talking about the importance of church, the significant difference between racism and prejudice, teamwork, inclusion and much more.
As always they end with the Fun Fact Finale and we find out many random things about Byrd, including his go-to snack, his worst habit, what he thinks he would’ve done with his life had football not worked, his favorite TV game show and much more.
