The New York Yankees are hot again and considering it’s currently 93 degrees in my residence of Bradenton, Florida—I am as well. To hell with this heat!
Seeing I’m sure you only care about the former, the Bombers used yet another splendid start by Luis Severino on the mound to coincide with the offense tallying a nine spot in a 9-5 Wednesday afternoon victory over the hapless Cincinnati Reds.
New York swept the two game miniseries and have now won five of six and six of their last eight games.
The Bombers built a 2-0 lead early on a pair of RBI singles from rookie Clint Frazier and kind of staggered offensively before doubling their lead in the sixth and blowing it open with five runs in the seventh; highlighted by homers from Didi Gregorius and Todd Frazier, his first dinger with the team.
Gregorious has now homered in three straight games, obviously for the first time in his career. He also has an eight-game hitting streak going in which he’s batting .517 (14-for-29) with five dingers and eight RBI. It’s safe to say he’s beginning to establish himself among the upper echelon of hitting shortstops in the game. If he can continue to produce even relatively close to the rate he is now over the next few years, what a treat it’ll be to go with the influx of gifted young talent coming up through the system.
However, the real story was the continued brilliance of Severino. He allowed only one base hit to a Red not named Joey Votto (2-for-2 with a walk) through six innings and overall fired seven innings of allowing just two unearned runs on three hits and two walks to go with nine strikeouts.
Of the 27 batters Severino faced, only five balls left the infield. He’ has an ERA of 3.03 over 127.2 innings on the season. That’s some good shit right there.
New York improved to 53-46 and as of this posting sit a half-game back of Boston. The Yanks start a four game divisional matchup with Tampa on Thursday in the Bronx, with CC Sabathia getting the ball in the opener against Chris Archer.
